The
Campaign for a Trade Union Rights and Freedoms Bill
John Hendy QC, National
Secretary of the United Campaign assisted the TUC in
drafting the Trade Union Rights and Freedoms Bill. The
United Campaign, along with our supporters, has played
a key role in promoting and pushing for the Bill.
If enacted the Bill
would significantly strengthen trade union rights including:
- Better protection
for striking workers
- Simpler and
fairer industrial action balloting and notice procedures
- Reform of
the use of injunctions by employers
- Allowing solidarity
action in certain circumstances
- Prevention
of the use of replacement labour during strikes
- Trade union
rights for prison officers
The Trade Union
Rights and Freedoms Bill was first brought before Parliament
on the 2nd March 2007 and had its final reading on the
19th October 2007. To coincide with the reading of the
Bill the United Campaign organised rallies and a national
demonstration outside the House of Commons.
Despite the Bill
not passing, it remains a key document outlining the
minium acceptable rights of trade unions and continues
to have the support of the TUC.
The United Campaign
will continue to fight for the rights outlined in the
Trade Union Rights and Freedoms Bill.
