Delegates at TUC Congress
in Manchester voted unanimously on Monday to support John
McDonnell's Private Members Bill which if passed will
prevent employers from using minor technicalities to overrule
democratic ballots.
The Composite motion on
Employment Rights reaffirmed Congress' commitment to ending
"the UK's repressive anti-trade union laws" by fully
supporting the Lawful Industrial Action
(Minor Errors) Bill.
The motion was moved by
Unites' Len McCluskey who said the current laws are being
used to stop members standing up for their rights. He said
all that employers "need is an expensive lawyer and a
willing judge
" and the right to take strike action
can easily be revoked.
He went on to say "this
composite rightly says we need to get behind John McDonnell's
Bill" and that "this movement will fight to defend
the right to strike".
The motion called for
Congress to support the Bill by attending the lobby
of Parliament on the 13th October and by asking
MPs to be in the Commons for the Second Reading on the 22nd
October.
The motion was seconded
by RMT and supported by BECTU, NUJ, URTU, PCS and UCU.
