"The big story from
TUC won't have passed United Campaign supporters by. There's
to be a day of action on 30 November after up to 2,000,000
working people in Britain have been balloted for action over
the attack on public sector pensions.
No doubt the anti-trade
union laws will play a big part. Hopefully they will not thwart
the action this time. Four unions - Unison, Unite, GMB and
the Fire Brigades' Union - are already balloting over co-ordinated
industrial action. 10 other unions are also looking to hold
a vote on strikes.
As ever, division is our
enemy. Private sector pensions are also vulnerable and start
at a low base for the vast majority, but that shouldn't undermine
the support we all have to give those taking part on 30 November.
A demonstration of strength will benefit all - including our
children and existing pensioners.
At our fringe at TUC,
Amanda Brown told of a bank of computers at NUT conference
with a pension calculator programme to show the effect of
the government's proposals - there were any number of teachers
shocked to tears looking at how much they will have to work
longer for less.
