The local media dubbed
the event a "School for Strikers", which wasn't
a problem for those organising and attending the North East
Shop Stewards Network on Saturday 10 September in the impressive
Gateshead Civic Centre. The United Campaign played a full
part.
The standard of debate
was very high. There was a lot of thoughtful reflection and
listening. There weren't enough people present, but there
never are. Attendance diversity was also an issue, as it is
too often.
Derek Cattell spoke to
his new booklet "Going on Strike" inspired as he
was by Ken Montague's 1979 pamphlet of the same name. Gary
Fabian represented the United Campaign and spoke of his experiences
of industrial action over many years in a educational and
entertaining way. And our Director, John Usher, delivered
an equally entertaining presentation on the current state
of the law.
