The ETUC and the European
Social Forum have last week issued statements on the ECJ cases.
The ETUC announced its
plans to attend the 'Forum on workers' rights and economic
freedoms' organised by the European Commission in an attempt
to "reiterate its request for a social progress protocol
to be attached to EU treaties". The social progress protocol
is intended to remedy the negative impact of the recent judgments
by the European Court of Justice in 4 cases, namely Viking,
Laval, Ruffert and Luxembourg.
The recent statement
from the European Social Forum has called for "mobilisation
to strengthen workers' rights in Europe". The ESF cited
the ETUC's call for a social progress clause which would "subordinate
... economic freedoms to social rights and workers' rights"
and stated their strong support for the proposal.
The ESF also announced
four proposals for mobilisation against the judgements of
the ECJ. To read the proposals and the statement in full click
