John Usher, United Campaign

The new government has promised £6bn worth of cuts to the public sector. Workers will be forced to take pay cuts and pensions too wi ll be under attack.

Where workers have decided to fight back against creeping privatizati on and threats to their liveli hood antiunion laws have been used to prevent them. Challenges to industrial action ballots and anti-union injunctions have become the norm.

The right of trade unions to take poli tical action is further endangered from the new Liberal-Conservative alliance. The Conservatives have stated their intention to attack union political funds and further deny workers the right to protect their pay and conditions.

In the wake of the general election speakers will discuss the i mplications for trade union rights and how unions should prepare and respond. This meeting will provide a platform for the launch of a post-election strategy to prepare unions for the challenges confronting the labour movement.
