President: Vic Turner
Vic Turner,
a former docker was one of the Pentonville Five shop stewards
who were jailed in 1972. Following their arrest, a rolling
series of strikes caused work stoppages until the TUC had
to call for an official strike and demanded the release of
the five shop stewards. As a result thousands of striking
workers marched through North London to Pentonville Prison.
The dockers were eventually released. Vic Turner later worked
for Newham Council and was then elected as a Councillor and
served for many years before being elected as Mayor. Vic Turner
